Any shot either Texas or Oklahoma had at a national title in 2007 was likely lost last week as both were upset. Thus, the teams stage their Red River Rivalry in Dallas Saturday, with the loser forfeiting any hope for a Big 12 championship game appearance.
The Sooners’ loss at Colorado was shocking, since they took a 10-point lead to the half, and because they went into the game outscoring foes by a 61.5-11.8 count. For the Longhorns, the 41-21 loss to K-State was not as stunning, as they showed signs of vulnerability earlier. In any case, the team that picks itself back up “sooner”, should have the edge here.
Seeing as how the Red River Rivalry is always played in Dallas, there is theoretically no so-called home field advantage. However, anyone who was been to “Big D” knows the type of following the Longhorns get there. EDGE - TEXAS
Series History: Prior to the last two relatively easy wins for Texas, Oklahoma had dominated the head-to-head series this decade, winning five in a row, both SU & ATS. In two of the games, the Sooners surpassed the 60-point mark, infuriating fans of the Longhorns and sending lifelong reverberations through the rivalry.
This annual skirmish has not always generated the most exciting games, nevertheless the anticipation and the seats divided equally down the middle always makes this spectacle. The Oklahoma offense has been quite a spectacle in its own right. Sam Bradford has been virtually unstoppable and unflappable in his first season under center. Pinpoint accuracy behind one of the best three O-Lines in college football, makes Bradford extraordinarily prodigious. The defense has 11 angry college students, who enjoy partying, at the ball.
Texas has played well enough and will have to match the Sooners intensity to stay in this conflict. The Longhorns have been a bit poltroon in tight situation other than Vince Young’s final two seasons. Colt McCoy will be out to prove last year’s 28-10 win was not a fluke and Texas can rise to the occasion. With Oklahoma back on top of there game, this is a real measuring stick for Mack Brown’s club, since they will be underdogs.
Oklahoma trails in series all-time 57-39-5, but are 5-2 SU and ATS in last seven played. The straight up winner has won the Red River Rivalry by double digits the last nine games. The winner walks away with distinct edge, as both teams will be favored in all games the rest of the way. An unblemished season could mean a trip to Glendale, AZ for the winner.
