In a big opening week in the Big Ten, two of the top contenders will meet in Madison in a primetime showdown on ABC

2007-09-21

In a big opening week in the Big Ten, two of the top contenders will meet in Madison in a primetime showdown on ABC. Some of the luster has been taken off this game as Wisconsin has looked shoddy in back-to-back weeks and Iowa comes off a loss to rival Iowa State.

Still, the Badgers are 3-0 and have a nation’s best 12-game winning streak intact. However, they’ve struggled with Iowa, losing four of five, including last two at home. Wisky is 5-2 ATS at home under Bielema and Iowa has lost six straight road games ATS. This has been a defensive dominated series, with the under converting in six of L8 games.

With Michigan’s departure from the elite and the Big Ten bumbling and stumbling in non-conference action, the league might be more wide open then experts believed before the season began. The first chapter will be unveiled in Madison, as the Badgers host the team the locals love to hate in Iowa. Most would believe Wisconsin is the odds on favorite to be Rose Bowl worthy at this juncture. The Badgers defense has been sloppier then expected and will need to tighten up in league play.

Iowa’s defense has carried them in 2007, albeit against crummy offensive teams. This will be the Hawkeyes first real test to prove if this is legit contender or pretender in Big 10. The offense has returned to traditional values with sophomore QB Jake Christensen. Iowa runs to set up the pass and has mostly achieved success thanks to defense setting up shorter fields. If Iowa expects to win, Christensen will have to make plays in the passing game. The Hawkeyes have nice trend in there favor and that is they are 8-1 ATS as underdogs in the second of back to back road encounters.

Iowa will be filled with alacrity because of recent 4-1 SU and ATS record against Bucky’s Badgers. Good measure of each clubs strengths and weaknesses headed into the teeth of the Big Ten campaign. Prediction – Look for a handy double-digit win by the Badgers. Anything less would be uncivilized.
